Free Secret Santa Generator

Add names, set rules, and give everyone a private link that shows only their own match.

0 participants. You can paste a whole list at once.

2. Exclusions (optional, e.g. couples)

can't draw

3. Event details (optional, shown on every result page)

How it works

  1. Add your participants. Type one name per line or paste a list from a spreadsheet or group chat. Add an email next to a name if you like.
  2. Set exclusions and details. Stop partners or siblings from drawing each other, then add a budget, exchange date and any notes.
  3. Draw and share. Press the button and copy each person’s private link. Opening it reveals only who that person is buying for.

A Secret Santa name draw without the hat

Pulling names from a hat works when everyone is in the same room, but it falls apart quickly. Someone draws their own name, the couple at the table pull each other, or half the group is joining from another city. This free Secret Santa generator does the draw for you online, so the whole exchange can be organized in a couple of minutes from a phone or laptop.

You do not need to sign up, install an app, or hand over anyone’s contact details. Type the names, press draw, and the tool creates a separate private link for each participant. When a person opens their link they see a short greeting, a button to reveal their match, and the budget, date and notes you added. Nobody else’s pairing is shown on that page.

Fair, random and rule-aware

Behind the button, the generator shuffles the group using the Fisher–Yates method with your browser-grade cryptographic random source, then checks each possible assignment against your rules. If a combination breaks a rule, it steps back and tries another until it finds a draw where nobody has themselves and every exclusion is respected. Because it searches systematically rather than guessing, it can also tell when your rules leave no possible solution. In that case you get a plain message explaining that the draw is impossible, rather than a result that silently ignores one of your rules.

Exclusions are useful in more situations than you might expect. Couples who already buy for each other, parents and young children, flatmates who will see each other’s parcels arrive, or two colleagues who drew each other last year can all be kept apart. Add as many rules as you need; the “apply both ways” option saves you entering each pair twice.

Keeping the surprise for the organizer too

With a paper draw, the person running it often ends up knowing every pairing. Here the organizer can join the exchange like anyone else. The full list of results is tucked away and only appears after two deliberate confirmations, and you can download it as a CSV if you want a backup in case someone loses their link. If you never open it, you will be as surprised as everybody else on the day.

Works for families, friends and offices

The same simple steps work for a family Christmas, a remote team, a classroom, a book club or a holiday party with friends. Setting a budget keeps gifts fair, an exchange date reminds everyone when to have presents ready, and notes are handy for themes, wrapping rules, delivery addresses for remote groups or a reminder to bring a wish list. Every participant sees the same details on their own page, so nobody has to scroll back through a long chat to find them.

Privacy by design

We only keep what the draw needs to work: the names you entered, the matches, any event details, and optional email addresses. Each private link uses a long random code that is impractical to guess, and every draw is deleted automatically after 30 days. There are no accounts and no participant tracking. You can read the details in our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Secret Santa generator really free?

Yes. Drawing names, adding exclusions and sharing private links costs nothing, and you do not need to create an account.

Can someone draw their own name?

No. The draw never assigns anyone to themselves. Every result is checked before links are created.

How do exclusions work?

Pick two people and the generator will make sure the first one never draws the second. Tick "apply both ways" for couples or housemates so neither draws the other.

What happens if my exclusion rules make a draw impossible?

The generator tells you clearly that no valid draw exists instead of quietly breaking a rule. Remove or relax one exclusion and draw again.

Can the organizer see who got whom?

Only if they choose to. Full results are hidden behind two confirmation steps so the organizer can still take part without spoiling the surprise.

How long are the private links kept?

Each draw is stored only as long as needed and is deleted automatically 30 days after it is created.

Do I need everyone’s email address?

No. Email is optional. You can copy each private link and send it through any chat app, text message or email you already use.

How many people can join one draw?

You need at least three participants. Up to 200 names fit in a single draw, which covers most families, friend groups and offices.
